The Birth. Day. Series is focused on the notion of celebration within the African American community. Birth. Day l evokes memories of coming up during the civil rights movement in Washington. Our birthday celebrations were emblematic of close bonds in community, as well as extended family. Families came together to support each other. In this first painting my sisters and brothers and neighbors in the Petworth community.
